BONE MARROW COLLECTION METHODS
Collection of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) - this method is used in approximately 80% of donors.
The donor receives growth factor subcutaneously for 5 days, which releases stem cells into the bloodstream. These cells are then selected from the blood at the collection clinic/center using apheresis.
Bone marrow collection - this method involves taking the necessary stem cells from a donor under general anaesthesia using a needle from the back of the hip bone. The process takes about 60 minutes and during it, about one liter of a mixture of blood and bone marrow is taken.
The decision on the choice of collection method depends on the patient's health condition and the decision of the attending physician. Donor preferences are also taken into account when possible.
